It’s true there was a little absurd controversy about Maui’s shape when Disney first released their world premiering trailer for the highly anticipated – Moana; but that’s made New Zealand, the world and myself no less excited to see it released here on December 26th 2016.

Seeing as kiwi’s are pretty much claiming this new Disney fairy-tale as our own, I’m here to get you up to speed on what you need to know now!

This is the gal herself: Moana (voiced by Auli’i Cravalho), is an adventurous, tenacious and compassionate 16-year-old who sails out on a daring mission to save her people. Along the way, she discovers the one thing she’s always sought: her own identity.

This is the man with no body self-esteem issues thank you very much: Maui (voiced by Dwayne
‘The Rock’ Johnson) is a demigod – half god, half mortal, all awesome. Charismatic and funny, he wields a magical fishhook that allows him to shapeshift into all kinds of animals and pull up islands from the sea.

Roughly what we know about the narrative at the moment is that; three thousand years ago, the greatest sailors in the world voyaged across the vast South Pacific, discovering the many islands of Oceania. But then, for a millennium, their voyages stopped – and no one today knows why.

Moana is a spirited teenager and accepts the challenge of her mission, to prove herself a master wayfinder and fulfill her ancestors’ unfinished quest. During her journey, Moana meets Maui and together, they traverse the open ocean on an action-packed voyage, encountering enormous fiery creatures and impossible odds.

Directed by the renowned filmmaking team of Ron Clements and John Musker (The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, The Princess and the Frog) and produced by Osnat Shurer (Lifted, One Man Band), Disney Moana sails into NZ cinemas December 26th 2016.

Have you checked out the trailer yet?

I don’t know about you but I think I’m really going to be smitten by this uniquely Pacific flavoured Disney film and I can’t wait to see it!
