What’s fresh in NZ Cinemas this week as opined by One Take Kate – what do you wanna see? It’s Sunday afternoon so it’s the perfect time to hit the cinema and beat the heat if you just want to unwind and escape, or perhaps you’re looking for the perfect date night movie once things cool down. Check out what’s on offer this weekend…next round of popcorn’s on you!

American Sniper

Cooper uses American Sniper to take aim at critics who didn’t believe he could top his performance of Rocket Raccoon in Guardians of the Galaxy.

American Sniper looks to be a gritty and gripping modern war film and is also a true story of the life and memoirs of Chris Kyle, the most lethal sniper in U.S history. All buzz and the trailer alone suggest that Bradley Cooper (GOTG, Hangover series…ya know, everything!) is smashing this performance and bringing a human side to the spoils of war. I’m not usually one to rush and see cinema based on 90s U.S. war conflict, but this looks to be a gut-wrenching watch; with Clint Eastwood (Hail!) producing and directing. So ah…instant classic somewhat. The Eastwood Factor has pulled many an accolade from his previous films and cast members (Million Dollar Baby anyone?) and this promises to deliver the same.

The Last: Naruto the Movie.

I know nothing! But I sure am pumped for all those Naruto fans. Image via

Ok, full disclosure…I know absolutely nothing about Naruto except that a heap of awesome peeps at Armageddon cosplay this beloved manga every year; so I’m going to keep this short and sweet as coming in to trailer review The Last: Naruto the movie, after it’s glorious decade long run feels a tad locking the stable door after the horse as bolted! What I will say, is that I know a lot of people will be extremely excited to see this final film chapter of the Naruto franchise on screen – and it certainly looks beautiful, as everyone’s favourite orange ninja kicks butt and fights to keep the moon from falling to earth. Brutal!

Vikram gets all ‘Bollywood’s answer to Harvey Dent’. Image Via

i is a fantasy revenge story from Bollywood that looks freaking incredible! A sumptuous visual feast with fantastical characters; beasts, unparalleled beauty and with HUGE set and cast scenes; my #newyearsresolution to delve into Bollywood looks to be rewarded with this gem to kick it off. Directed by Bollywood legend Shankar; this action, thriller, romance-revenge flick is said to be his legacy film – three years in the making to come to screen fruition and embellished with a reported career making performance by popular leading man, Vikram. Atu tāṉ koṇṭu! (Bring it On in Tamil).

Birdman

Birdman has been described as brilliant, illuminating and colourful – and the critics weren’t just talking about these hot chili shaped fairy lights.

Woowee! My pick of the week – I cannot wait to see this incredible and innovative film by director Alejandro Gonzalez iNarritu (Babel, 21 Grams); that’s being touted as a ‘one shot’ style tour de force of film making, plus he also collected the best original screenplay award at the recent Golden Globes ceremony this year. The first and many claim best Batman (I can’t specify…love them all) –
Michael Keaton (Beetlejuice) also picked up a Golden Globe this year for his lead performance and looks to totally incinerate this role of a man losing control of his sense of fame…and also his mind. Packed with acting talent I’ve adored for years in Edward Norton (Fight Club, Grand Budapest Hotel), Emma Stone (The Help, Easy A) and Naomi Watts (King Kong) this Oscar dark-horse will be a cult favourite for years to come…surely.
