The Roses trailer has arrived—and if you’ve ever secretly wanted to watch two incredibly posh people destroy each other with savage style and emotional warfare, this one’s for you. Olivia Colman and Benedict Cumberbatch lead the charge in a darkly funny, deeply uncomfortable war of wills… and broken crockery. Here’s your first look at The Roses trailer, in what’s already shaping up to be one of the most anticipated releases of the year. With a sharp wit and modern edge, this dark comedy is inspired by the 1989 classic The War of the Roses.
Everything You Need to Know About The Roses First Look Trailer.
From the jump, the trailer paints a very “Pinterest-perfect” picture: Ivy and Theo Rose have the life we’re told to want. Beautiful home. Well-behaved kids. Glossy smiles. But we’re not here for happy endings—we’re here for the fallout.
The trailer quickly sours the sweet by showing the cracks. Ivy’s career’s on fire, while Theo’s ego is slowly crumbling. Cue escalating tension, passive-aggressive perfection, and designer chaos. By the final frame, you’re wondering: will anything in their house survive? This reveals just how much chaos, charm, and bite to expect.

Visual and Sound Design
Jay Roach brings an eye for opulence—but the kind that makes your skin crawl. Everything looks pristine, but something’s always a little… off. The colour palette is crisp, clean, and quietly menacing. The score dances between elegant classical and anxiety-inducing strings, hinting that even the quietest moments are about to explode.
Why Fans Are Buzzing About the First Look at The Roses Trailer.
This isn’t just a rehash of The War of the Roses—it’s a sharp, modern retelling that swaps 1980s satire for millennial microaggressions. Colman’s Ivy oozes controlled rage and ambition, while Cumberbatch brings an unravelling kind of arrogance that’s honestly thrilling to watch fall apart.
Surrounding them? A powerhouse cast including Andy Samberg, Allison Janney, Ncuti Gatwa, and Kate McKinnon—serving up biting commentary and chaos. Expect verbal bloodbaths and the kind of “oh-no-they-didn’t” moments you’ll want to rewind.
Expectations and Predictions
Given Roach’s comedy legacy (Austin Powers, Meet the Parents) and his pivot into the darker satire zone with Bombshell, The Roses is set to land in that razor-sharp sweet spot. Add Tony McNamara’s (The Favourite, Poor Things) script into the mix and we’re almost guaranteed delicious dysfunction and award-season buzz. We’re expecting powerhouse performances, interior design envy, and at least one monologue that becomes an instant meme.

Editor’s Note: I’ll be real with you—this one has me grinning like a gremlin. The cast? Dream team. The tone? Deliciously nasty. The trailer teases domestic doom in the prettiest packaging—and I’m here for every passive-aggressive toast and designer tantrum. The Roses looks spectacularly witty and devilishly funny. I can’t help but snicker when I listen to Benedict Cumberbatch in this trailer as I can hear peeps of Smaug coming through. The idea of a treasure hoarding dragon fighting with his wife is silly to me!
I was a strange kid that grew up too fast with too much time to my own devices and access to Sky Movies from when I was around 12 years old. As a consequence, I loved The War of the Roses (1989) when I saw it as a kid released to Sky Movies likely somewhere from 1990 – 1992. I loved the interplay of Kathleen Turner and Michael Douglas from their chemistry in the Romancing the Stone (1984) and Jewel of the Nile movies. Plus, I’d seen Michael Douglas in Fatal Attraction at WAY too young and age and I was already piecing together intertextuality or narrative referencing, because I was happy to see Douglas’s character getting his comeuppance in this film due to his dirty dealings in Fatal Attraction.
Dispensing with the nostalgia, a watch through of this trailer had me excited to see a return of the star-studded comedy to our cinema screens. The Roses looks biting, satirical and refreshed to skewer the privileged and misbehaving rich folk of today. The chemistry between Coleman (who is brilliant in everything I’ve ever seen her in) and Cumberbatch is striking, even if from the outset I didn’t ‘buy’ them as a couple but was convinced by the end of the trailer. Bring it on! A bit of silly, marital warfare will be a nice change up to see in cinema.
